Recent performances have sharpened in everyone’s mind the fact that Chelsea need a new central defender.
There are a ton of options in the squad, but not one of them really seems good enough to be a long term, world class option if we want to get back to the top of the world.
One target we’ve been looking at is Ousmane Diomande, who is about to win the Portuguese league with Sporting Club de Portugal. But a report today from TeamTalk claims that the 20 year old would prefer a move to Arsenal, also apparently interested in making a summer move. We can well believe it.
And that’s not going to be the last time we hear this. Declan Rice, last summer, was just the start.
The new reality
This is just the new reality Chelsea fans are going to have to come to terms with. The club can still live on its reputation for a while yet, as most young players today were growing up at the peak of our glory years. But every year where we sit in midtable damages that historic reputation.
Even worse than that, our immediate situation outside any form of European competition with no real prospect of getting back to the top anytime soon makes us less and less appealing every passing year.
That’s before you even get to the financial nightmare that means that Arsenal, long unable to compete with us on wages, can now offer better money as well as a better chance of winning things.
What a mess we’re in.
