Chelsea’s defensive pair look like strangers despite long history – another transfer failure from upstairs

There were plenty of raised eyebrows when Chelsea signed Axel Disasi last summer, but one of the arguments used in favour of it, to overturn the doubters, was that he had played many games together with January signing Benoit Badiashile.

The two knew each other well from Monaco, and would now be able to link up again at Chelsea. A ready made partnership for the middle of our defence.

Due to Badiashile’s injuries we’ve not been able to see them much as a pair, although on yesterday’s evidence we were sold a lie anyway. The two played like they’d only met in the car park before the game. It was like watching two midfielders thrown in at the last minute to play out of position, not a pair of players who should know each other well.

If it had gone well, this could have been the double act we saw for the rest of the season, finally bringing some stability at the back. But as it stands, it looks like Trevoh Chalobah or Levi Colwill will get parachuted back in as soon as they’re ready.
