€10m release clause makes this a top option for Chelsea – but there is a major Red obstacle in the way

The fact that Liverpool and many other teams are going to be looking for a manager this summer puts Chelsea in a very tricky situation.

They may not be happy with Mauricio Pochettino’s performance, but they have to be realistic about who they would get in to replace him. List off the best 3 or 4 options available, and then remember that 2 of them will likely go to Bayern Munich and Liverpool, and that Barcelona and other top sides will have vacancies too.

Sacking Pochettino suddenly doesn’t seem like such a no-brainer.

One man who has been linked for some time and will continue to be connected with the job is Ruben Amorim. It sounds like he’s of Liverpool’s list too.

Florian Plettenberg has just Tweeted that he’s “definitely a candidate” for the Reds, but also notes our interest.

He writes that Chelsea are “monitoring him, should things not progress further with Pochettino.”

There is then the interesting detail that his release clause this summer would be just €10m. Give Pochettino and his staff will be halfway through their two year deal, this makes the whole operation to get him out and Amorim in rather cheap, if this clause is real.

The much bigger problem is going to be Liverpool, should their interest turn into something concrete. They are a much more tempting option for any coach, with a winning squad and a strong setup from top to bottom at the club. The contrast to our situation couldn’t be more stark, unfortunately.
