Fabrizio Romano responds to Chelsea links with 24 year old in exclusive column

Chelsea have today been linked with interest in Brazilian goalkeeper Bento.

Fabrizio Romano has had his say on the whispers in his exclusive column for CaughtOffside, and while he has played down anything concrete, he does concede that there is likely to be some interest in the Athletico Paranaense goalkeeper, who is still just 24 and looking increasingly ripe for a European move.

Romano doesn’t sound too convinced by the current iteration of the rumours, but he certainly doesn’t rule anything out.

“Bento – Despite this talented Brazilian goalkeeper being linked with Chelsea, I’m not aware of contacts with Chelsea so far, let’s see what they decide to do but at this point, nothing is concrete,” he said in some interesting quotes in his exclusive column.

“Chelsea still have to decide what they want to do with GKs in general having also Kepa and Slonina set to return from their loan deals this summer,” Romano continued.

We will be keeping an eye on these rumours to see if more develops over the next couple of months. Given where he’s coming from, Bento could prove a bargain buy for a top European side if he’s as good as hoped.

Goalkeeper gridlock

Largely however, Chelsea have a tricky situation to sort out in goal this summer, whether or not the Bento rumours are true.

Kepa Arrizabalaga will return from his loan to Real Madrid, where he ended up losing his place, so poor were his performances. He will be joined by Gabriel Slonina, also back from loan after a disappointing season.

Then there’s the two options we have at the club – Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic. Neither of them has fans particularly excited, hence the rumoured interest in Bento.

So long before we can take any bids for the Brazilian goalkeeper seriously, we have to figure out what to do with the FOUR keepers we already have on our books.
