One Young Player of the Month; and one out for the season – a tale of two loanees

With no Chelsea game being played this week, this is turning into quite the RC Strasbourg blog.

We’ve already heard today about Andrey Santos’ improving form there, and he’s just won Ligue 1’s Young Player of the Month.

There is some bad news to go along with that however. His fellow loanee Angelo Gabriel, following a really bright season following his move from Brazil, has been shut down for the season thanks to injury.

Patrick Vieira explained as much in his presser today, saying “it’s settled” that the winger won’t play again this season. It seemed like a minor issue when he picked it up in March, but he’s not been seen since and clearly it was more severe than anticipated.

Angelo’s future

It’s not clear what next year’s plan for Angelo is just yet. He’s played a lot and played well for Strasbourg, and the sensible option would seem to be to send him back for another year. That’s what the rumours are saying, and we’d be happy to see it.

Certainly Andrey Santos looks like he’s coming into his own under Vieira, and we’d like to see him return next year for more minutes and more experience. Angelo is probably the same story. But is using up two foreign loan slots too much to ask? It will be interesting to see what the sporting directors plans are this summer, especially if we don’t manage to get rid of Romelu Lukaku and Kepa Arrizabalaga, currently occupying two of those valuable spaces.
