“The type of player you want in the squad” – Pochettino hails academy star with pointed messages to selfish kids in the group

Alfie Gilchrist’s goal to make it 6-0 against Everton last night was a truly glorious football moment.

His celebration was pure joy, and it did a great job in wiping away some of the unpleasantness of earlier in the match.

After the game, Mauricio Pochettino was happy to praise the academy youngster, who he has enjoyed using as a late sub in situations just like this.

We’d imagine he wasn’t exactly expecting him to smash in a volley from a tight angle when he called for him off the bench – that’s just a bonus.

“He’s an amazing guy in the way that he works, he is always available. He’s the type of player you want in the squad,” the coach glowed in quotes picked up by the club’s official website.

You can see the contrast with the penalty spat – Alfie is always there to do his part for the team, whether that’s for 90 seconds as a sub or 90 minutes as a starter. He’s just happy to get on the pitch and help his team.

Man City team

This weekend’s game against Man City now becomes the biggest of the season, and Mauricio Pochettino has to make some big decisions in his defence.

Thiago Silva was an outcast before, but the team seems to have a little more stability with him back in it. Trevoh Chalobah has almost certainly earned a guaranteed spot in the middle, but who to play alongside him?

We wouldn’t expect Gilchrist to start, but the youngster has once again made a positive impression on his manager, and put more pressure on those above him. When you see how players like Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi have performed at times this season, there’s no reason Gilchrist shouldn’t be seriously considered as close to a first team starter at this point.
