CONFIRMED: Option activated for 16 G/A talent’s contract extension

Chelsea are busy appointing a new coach, but that doesn’t mean the sporting directors can neglect their other duties. There are a huge amount of decisions to be made with the squad in general – and it seems like one no-brainer has already been checked.

Nizaar Kinsella has slipped in to his BBC update today the little detail that Omari Hutchinson has had his contract extended by the club, who have activated an option to unilaterally boost it a year, so that it now runs until 2025. Kinsella notes that the decision of whether to keep, sell or loan the winger will be down to new coach Maresca.

There will be no shortage of interest in the winger after an impressive season in the Championship where he racked up 10 goals and 16 assists for the Tractor Boys. They’re keen to keep him on board following his impressive season there, and will do all they can to secure him on a permanent deal or another loan. But they aren’t the only teams likely to have an interest.

The best move for Omari’s career

To us, another loan is the clear best option. This contract extension means we’re still sitting pretty to sell him for good money next summer should we wish, but as it stands he’s not going to gain much by sitting on our bench. We’ve got a few wingers on the books already and look likely to add at least one more this summer.

The last thing we want is all of this season’s impressive progress wasted with a season playing just the occasional Conference League game for us next year. Despite his obvious talent he’s probably not yet ready to be a regular starter for us – so why not keep him somewhere where he is?

In the end though that decision will come down to new man Maresca it seems.
