Former Spurs boss believes 22-year-old could develop into a “top class” number nine for the Blues

Harry Redknapp believes Nicolas Jackson gets too much criticism at times and could develop into a “top class number nine.”

Jackson arrived at Stamford Bridge last summer from Spanish side Villareal and has impressed in his first season in England.

The 22-year-old has scored 13 Premier League goals and 16 in all competitions, which matches Didier Drogba’s total from his first season in blue.

Jackson has come in for criticism for the amount of chances he’s missed, and has himself admitted he should have scored more goals this campaign.

The Senegal international has impressed with his all round play, and if he can improve on his finishing then he has all the attributes to develop into a top striker.

Despite the missed chances Jackson is really important to how the team play, he creates a lot of chances and stretches the opposition with his pace, and when he was away at the Africa Cup of Nations Chelsea did miss him.

Redknapp has backed Jackson to develop into a top striker.

Former Spurs manager Redknapp believes the Senegalese can develop into a top striker for the Blues in the coming years, and thinks the forward gets too much criticism.

‘”I think Nicolas Jackson gets a bit too much stick at times”, Redknapp told BetVictor.

“I know he has missed quite a few chances, but he’s still got 13 goals in the league so far and you forget he’s only 22 and in his first year at the club.

“He never stops running and does so much good work in terms of his hold-up play.

“If he can keep working on his finishing, he could develop into a top class number nine.”

Jackson has set himself a target of 15 league goals, meaning he needs to score twice in Chelsea’s last three games.

The Blues head to Nottingham Forest on Saturday knowing they need three points if they are to keep alive their hopes of securing a top six finish and qualifying for the Europa League.
