Chelsea in talks to play first game with Enzo Maresca in charge and it’s soon

Chelsea fans could get to see Enzo Maresca’s first Chelsea game as new head coach much sooner than they would have expected, according to a report today.

Maresca was only announced as the new Chelsea manager officially by Chelsea on Monday afternoon, and he doesn’t officially start his job there until July the 1st. But already Chelsea are planning his first match in charge.

Sources: Players reaction to Enzo Maresca plus the director who pushed the appointment

According to The Daily Mail, Chelsea are in talks with AFC Wimbledon over playing a potential friendly at Plough Lane next month in what could be Enzo Maresca’s first game in charge.

So Blues fans might not have to wait long now to see Maresca begin his reign as Blues boss, albeit as a friendly match.

Hit the ground running

Maresca needs to get fans on side

It will be so important for Maresca to hit the ground running as Chelsea manager, even in pre-season friendlies. He will want and need the Chelsea fanbase behind him entirely and to do that means he will need good results and performances right from the off.

Mauricio Pochettino started his Chelsea reign unbeaten in pre-season, but things certainly started to get much worse for him and his team and they fell off the tracks early in the season and never really got back on them again.

Maresca will need consistency and to keep momentum going at the very start of the season and to carry that on. The fact that his appointment was such a big risk as well, and his style of play is what some might consider bland at times if the goals are not going in and the results aren’t coming, means that he could quickly lose the fan base at Stamford Bridge and not only that, turn them against him. That would be very bad for him and very bad for the decision makers at Chelsea who will once again come under fire.
