Chelsea squad set for pre-season shock under Enzo Maresca’s fitness coach

Chelsea’s players could be in for a shock when they return for pre-season training with a number of changes expected to take place according to reports.

The Blues confirmed the appointment of Enzo Maresca as their new head coach on Monday afternoon, with the Italian signing a five year deal at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca led Leicester City to the Championship title last season, and is now tasked with bringing silverware to Chelsea and getting the club back into the Champions League.

Players in for a shock when they return for pre-season?

The Telegraph report that fitness coach Marcos Alvarez who moved with Maresca to Chelsea has earned a reputation as a strict dietician from his spells with Tottenham, Parma and Leicester.

The report adds that former manager Mauricio Pochettino kept an eye on what the players were eating, but stopped short of banning items, but that might not be the case with Alvarez, and the players could return to see some of their favourite items off the menu.

Alvarez has a reputation as a strict dietician.

The Telegraph state Alvarez banned fried eggs from breakfast at Leicester last season, but despite his strict regime he’s remained well liked by players.

Chelsea players not on international duty will report back to training on July 4th and could well be in for a shock, with the club set to head on their pre-season tour of America in late July.

Alvarez is believed to have made the Spurs team lose 100 kilos and is obsessive about body fat ratios, so the Chelsea players can expect to be monitored closely.

It sounds more like a military boot camp than football training, but it remains to be seen if any changes will be made, but the most important thing is to get the players on side early, and not lose them by banning a number of items from the menu.
