Blues set for £14m cash windfall from clauses in transfer and loan deals

Chelsea are set to bank up to £14m from clauses they inserted in transfer and loan deals this season according to reports.

A number of players left the club on loan, including the likes of Kepa Arrizbalaga, Ian Maatsen and Armando Broja.

Despite the criticism Chelsea’s ownership and sporting directors have faced, one thing they are seemingly very good at is making money from player sales and loan deals, and they appear to have struck again.

Chelsea set to bank £14m from add ons

The Athletic have reported the Blues will pocket between £11m-£14m from clauses inserted into transfer and loan deals.

Arrizbalaga had a mixed loan spell at Real Madrid, where he started in the team but was eventually replaced in the side by Andriy Lunin, with Thibaut Courtois out injured.

Incredibly Chelsea are still benefitting financially from Eden Hazard’s move to Real Madrid in 2019 despite his retirement from the game, with The Athletic adding the Blues raked in just under £10m for Madrid making the Champions League final.

Chelsea are set to benefit financially from loan deals such as Maatsen’s.

Maatsen spent the second half of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund, where he excelled in Germany, with the Bundesliga outfit keen to turn his loan move permanent this summer.

Dortmund’s surprising run to the Champions League final saw Chelsea benefit financially from a clause inserted into the loan deal, which I’m pretty sure no one at either club was expecting to be activated.

Chelsea also profited from Broja’s dire loan spell at neighbours Fulham with The Athletic adding the club received £4m due to the Albanian’s lack of game time at Craven Cottage.

The additional income will certainly be of benefit to Chelsea as the club look to stay within the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

More smart business whether on the incoming or outgoing side of things would be most welcome as the Blues gear up for another busy summer.
