CONFIRMED: Chelsea complete £22m sale for quick profit on winger

Chelsea have confirmed the outgoing transfer of Omari Hutchinson to Ipswich Town on their website this evening.

The winger spent last season there on loan and really impressed as a tricky and dynamic winger who started scoring and assisting regularly. In 44 appearances in the league along he racked up 10 goals and 6 assists. That’s a superb return for a player who is still just 20 and playing his first senior season.

“We wish Omari well as he begins a new chapter in his career and thank him for all his efforts while with the Blues,” a statement on the club site read.

A success story and a quick profit

In terms of a quick flip for profit, he’s the first (and only) real winner from this ownership so far. He was snapped up on a free, spent a year working his way through the ranks in the U21 team at Cobham, then went to the Tractor Boys on loan.

It wasn’t plain sailing there either – he had to force himself into manager Kieran McKenna’s plans, but over the course of the year he turned into a key player for them.

He won February’s player of the month award after some crucial goals and assists to put his team into a great position to secure automatic promotion, which they did after some dramatic twists late in the season. He won Ipswich’s Young Player of the Year award, and their intent was always clearly to secure him permanently.

The fee isn’t mentioned, but most sources were talking about a £22m price tag. It’s a shame there was no room for him in the first team squad, not even in preseason, but an offer like that is hard to turn down when you’re struggling to find a place for a player.
