€32m deal for Premier League captain makes no sense for Chelsea if they have to sell academy star

Transfer season is getting into gear, and Chelsea are starting to be linked with players from all over, regardless of how realistic they are.

A name that’s come up plenty of times before and is now making a comeback, is Max Kilman of Wolves. The classy centre back has today been connected to Chelsea by Give Me Sport, who say that the club captain “would certainly be attracted to the idea of joining one of the biggest clubs in the country,” if Chelsea could agree a transfer fee.

Transfermarkt value Kilman at €32m although one would expect he’s capable of fetching a fee closer to €40m at least. His wages are likely to be significant too – he’s 27 and this would be his biggest career payday, so he’s not going to settle for a smaller deal hoping to earn a better one somewhere down the line.

Max Kilman applauds the fans as he captains Wolves.

A trade off that makes no financial sense

From everything we’ve heard, the deal to sign Tosin Adarabioyo is almost done. That’s a move that makes sense, as a straight swap for the departing Thiago Silva.

This one doesn’t add up. You’d have to pay serious money to Wolves for their star centre back, and that’s just not happening unless we sell one of our plethora of centre backs. As it stands, it’s hard to see any of them leaving this summer beyond Trevoh Chalobah. And there’s no point selling him for £25m if you’re then just going to spend far more on Kilman.

The other options (Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, Wesley Fofana) have either arrived at the club too recently or been too consistently injured for us to make anything other than a major loss on them. So for now, these Kilman rumours seem like fantasy.

  1. Forget kilman, lets sort out keeping gallagher at chelsea ,he is one of the academy players who stepped up and got better and better and who was made captain, you can’t lose a player like him ,
chelsea owners need to take their finance head off and put a footballing head on , let common sense prevail and offer gallagher a decent contract.

  2. Yet another example of us not knowing what we are doing. We need to sell as many academy players as possible and keep Conor and Trev.
