€35m price would be stunning bargain for Chelsea and help them improve key position

Fabrizio Romano has been all over Chelsea news this morning, and his latest update has some pretty interesting stuff on Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

The insider reports that the 23 year old is available for just €35-40m, and his club have a “concrete” plan to sell him this summer according to Romano.

Chelsea have been linked with interest in him countless times before, and this now looks like the perfect time to try and secure a goalkeeper who is moving from “very good” to “elite” before our very eyes.

Goalkeeper is not at the top of the list of positions we’re expected to upgrade this summer, but it’s on there somewhere, and this opportunity could be unbeatable in terms of value. The idea that new manager Enzo Maresca wants a better ball-playing option also seems an important factor.

Time to cut our losses and look to upgrade

Of all the potential goalkeepers we’ve heard Chelsea linked with, this is really one that gets us most excited, perhaps along with Diogo Costa of Porto.

As he’s proving right now with Georgia at the Euros, Mamardashvili is a top class stopper, with loads of ability as a shot stopper, great size and presence and a natural leader. We had assumed his cost would be just too prohibitive given the demand for him, but if this report is accurate he’s more than gettable.

Of course the €40m on so spent on Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic is going to look a bit of a silly waste if we end up signing Mamardashvili a year later, but it’s better to admit your mistakes and act on them right away than “sunk cost fallacy” yourself into another season where you struggle in such a key position.

From now on, we’ll be listening closely to news about this one.
