Enzo Maresca has requested player at Chelsea pre-season to implement system change

Pending new Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has reportedly requested a player to be at pre-season training in order for him to implement his new tactical system change.

Maresca will be announced as new Chelsea boss today, and he will get straight to work this pre-season on bringing in a new possession-based style of football at Stamford Bridge.

Sources: Chelsea still eyeing centre backs, winger noise intensifies, Osimhen off the menu – who now?

Maresca is known for his football to be very much high-possession slower build up play but controlling games and dominating the opponent.

And to implement this change at Chelsea, he obviously wants all of his players to be in tow by pre-season so he can get to work on that.

However, there has been a debate brewing on whether midfielder Enzo Fernandez will be able to go and play for Argentina in the Olympic Games or not, and it sounds like he wants to.

But Chelsea and Maresca, understandably are not keen.

Fernandez key to the system change

Reports from local Argentine source Gaston Edul says Maresca wants Enzo Fernandez at pre season, he needs him from day one as he’s planning a system change. Chelsea do not want him to go to the Olympics.

Enzo will be key to the Chelsea system being one of the most expensive players in the squad and also being one of the most technically-gifted ball-players.

Our verdict

I think it’s totally fair for Maresca and Chelsea to want Enzo Fernandez at pre-season. He is also going to play at the Copa America this summer and he has also only just had surgery and missed the end of the season with Chelsea.

The club have made a big investment in Fernandez and they will want to protect his overall fitness and make sure he is in the best condition to start the next Premier League season, and I’m sure the player will respect and accept that too.
