£50m Premier League transfer has one good and one bad effect for Chelsea

Aston Villa are closing in the signing of Amadou Onana from Everton.

The powerful midfielder is close to a £50m move, according to top insider Fabrizio Romano, with a deal to be completed next week after the Belgian returned from the Euros.

Villa remain one of Chelsea’s top rivals for a place in the top 4, so it’s frustrating to see them strengthen with a quality player. They’ve appointed a great coach and sporting director, built a great squad and continue to make annoyingly solid moves every year.

At a fraction of the cost of Chelsea’s operation, they’ve refreshed their whole squad and made it to the Champions League. That will hopefully take its toll on their league form, but also gives them the cash and the draw to make these sorts of moves. The distance between us and them doesn’t look to be getting any smaller.

How the deal affects Chelsea

There are a few ways to view this deal from Chelsea’s point of view.

Firstly there are the large group of people who wanted us to sign him before he went to Everton, and still think we should have signed him from the Toffees. A year ago we could have snagged him for a similar fee, instead of either Moises Caicedo or Romeo Lavia. We would have had a player with a much strong track record in the Premier League.

But there’s another angle too – Everton are being pushed towards this sale because of their FFP issues. They will want to replace him cheaply, and one of their options appears to be taking Lesley Ugochukwu from us on loan, as we reported earlier today. So in that minor way, it’s a deal which benefits us.

Of course, signing Onana a year or two ago might have worked out even better.

    1. Any sane person wouldn’t pay £115 million for a bang average midfielder that’s barely proven after 1 season playing for Brighton & they’ve completely had Chelsea’s pants down & bent them over a barrel & shafted them hard multiple times. The business your clowns at Chelsea have been doing is a statement in how too get ripped off big time on a bunch of unproven youngsters to join your kindergarten & Cole Palmer was more luck than judgement I believe & the only decent one you bought. Cole Palmer fc.

  1. The distance between us & them doesn’t appear to be getting any smaller? Utter balderdash. If last season had gone on another month we WOULD have been above them & it would be us in the CL. I would wager my house on us finishing above Villa this season. No way does their squad have the ceiling & potential that our brilliant young players have, We’ll see.

    1. That’s just wishful thinking mate & ifs, buts & maybes don’t count for shit in reality, the premier league season is 38 games long,so saying if the season had gone on a month longer you’d have finished above Villa is speculation assuming after a 5 game winning run you’d win every other game is a guess. Chelsea did well too finish 6th after being shitty for 70% of the season & when your kids get any good most will be sold on for profit by your Yankee clown owners. Chelsea’s fans are stuck in the past mindset under Roman, but he’s long gone & present day Chelsea is a very different club & as you’ve spent 7× what Villa have in the last 2 years it shows what idiots are running your club going by your last 2 league positions, piss poor in reality & the table doesn’t lie,get real pal & remove your head from your ass…up the fuck’in Villa!!!
