Ex-Blue wasn’t expecting 22-year-old’s impact to be so big last season

Former Chelsea player Gary Cahill didn’t expect Cole Palmer’s impact to be a big as it was and described his season as “phenomenal.”

Palmer has been nothing short of a revelation following his move from Manchester City on deadline day last summer, and he hit the ground running straight away.

The 22-year-old took the Premier League by storm as he scored 22 goals and provided 11 assists which saw him named Premier League Young Player of the Year, and he also had a big impact for England.

Palmer played a key role for England in their run to the final of Euro 2024 and despite not starting a single game in Germany he scored in the penalty shootout win against Switzerland, set up Ollie Watkins’ last minute winner against the Netherlands, and scored a brilliant equaliser against Spain in the final.

The England international is having a well earned break after a long season before linking back up with his Chelsea team-mates for their tour of America, with the first game against Wrexham taking place on July 24th.

Palmer will be hoping for a repeat of his form last season under Maresca.

The task now facing Palmer is can he replicate or get near to what he achieved last season in the new campaign as people will be expecting him to deliver.

Former Blue Cahill has admitted he wasn’t expecting Palmer to have the impact he had so quickly and described his season as phenomenal.

“I think no one really maybe expected his impact to be as big as it was straight away,” he told The Charlotte Observer.

“He obviously comes from the pedigree of Man City, obviously he’s used to the league a bit more than others, but ability wise, he was phenomenal last season.”

Chelsea are heading into a new era under Enzo Maresca, someone Palmer knows well having worked with the Italian during his time in the City academy, and he will once again be key to any Chelsea success next season.
