Chelsea “adamant” they’re not chasing Euro superstar with €50m release clause

Dani Olmo’s impressive performances for Spain at the Euros, including a great goal in the semi final last night, are leading to him being linked to all manner of clubs.

Those links are being brought into focus very sharply by the fact that he has a £50m release clause which expires on Monday. Ryan Taylor of the Daily Mirror has today reported there’s a “high likelihood” that the clause will be triggered before that deadline, and initially said that Chelsea are “among the clubs to have shown concrete interest” in the RB Leipzig player.

However, within half an hour he had followed up with the information that Chelsea are “adamant” that they’re not pursuing a deal for Olmo, despite “appreciation for the player.”

Olmo is a lovely little player between the lines, with superb technique and ball striking. But he’s also a decent size and one can easily imagine him holding his own in the Premier League.

Not a natural fit for Chelsea

Olmo is a great player, and there’s a reason that top sides have long been linked with him. If it hadn’t been for injuries, he would have made that move long ago.

But right now, we’re not sure he is the sort of move Chelsea want to make, and we’re not at all surprised to see links being dismissed. He’s still only 26, but that is quite old given this current model of the club favours players under 26. The €50m release clause is cheap for a player that good, but is also pretty hefty given he doesn’t play in a position we desperately need more bodies.

Sadly it looks like this one is going to pass us by.- if only we had snagged him years ago! We were linked with him way back in January 2020, but never completed the deal.
