Chelsea announce new contract for 16 goal talent working his way towards senior loan

It’s not been a busy few weeks for Chelsea in general, at least compared to some recent windows, but things seem to be picking up speed now.

The Blues are making moves towards signing new players, but also have plenty of contract work to get done.

The club have just announced on their site that they’ve secured one of the brightest talents in the academy to a new deal. Jimmy-Jay Morgan has agreed a new contract which takes him until 2027.

The young forward signed 18 months ago from Southampton and had a great first full season playing for the Blues. He scored 16 times for the U-21 team in Premier League 2, burnishing his reputation as a deadly finisher with great movement.

The plan for Jimmy-Jay next season isn’t entirely clear. He’s still just 18 and probably isn’t yet ready for a senior loan yet, even to the lower leagues. We’d expect him to play another 6 months in the Development Squad, and things can be reconsidered in January if he keeps improving and developing physically. Striker is not an easy position to break out in in the lower divisions, and loans are difficult to get right.

The fact he’s got this new deal is a great show of faith in his future, however.

Chelsea tie one attacking talent down – and hope to make it the first of a few

Chelsea are losing a pretty regular trickle of top talents at the moment, with the most notable this summer being Rio Ngumoha, who looks set to join Liverpool. So it’s essential to keep some of these youngsters around, and it’s great to see JJM join the likes of Leo Castledine in signing a new contract.

The offer to Sam Rak-Sakyi, JJM’s regular teammate in the U21s, has yet to be accepted, but last week there were positive noises about it making progress.
