It wasn’t long ago that the Euros were “in full swing”, now they’re into the “final stages”, and the majority of players who were at the tournament are already back home or on holiday.
This means that the transfer window is starting to heat up – although we’ve already had plenty of fun on that front at Chelsea already. Fabrizio Romano never takes a day off either, and his latest reporting has added two first team Blues to the pile marked “could be sold.”
In his latest stream, the insider has reported that “one of Chilwell or Cucurella could leave [Chelsea] if they receive a good proposal.”
Both of these things have been vaguely mentioned on and off for some time, but Romano mentioning it now brings it into sharp focus. The two cases are interesting in their similarities – and their differences. Both are prime age players with a lot of experience. Both have great upsides, but also major flaws too.
The balance of the two
It’s clear to see why Chelsea might think they can go into the market and find something better – but equally the pair of them provide pretty solid options down that side, so there’s no desperation as there is in other parts of the squad.
The question is what kind of offers we would get, and what kind of offers we would consider a “good proposal.”
Cucurella is really shining at the Euros, potentially creating more interest in him. Chilwell on the other hand just can’t stay fit for long enough for us to rely on him – so it’s hard to see other teams taking a risk either.
If one was to go, you’d have to say it’s more likely to be Cucurella, simply for that reason. The question then becomes what a “good offer is.” We paid £60m to Brighton for him and won’t want to make a major loss.
