Chelsea could consider selling Champions League winner if price is right

Chelsea could consider selling vice captain Ben Chilwell if the price is right according to The Athletic, with the left back one of the highest earners at the club.

Chilwell arrived at Stamford Bridge in a deal worth £50m from Leicester City in 2020 and has won the Champions League and Uefa Super Cup during his time in west London.

Despite proving himself to be a key player for Chelsea over the years Chilwell’s time in west London has been plagued by injury issues and he struggled to stay fit last season.

Chelsea could consider telling Chilwell

There’s no doubting Chilwell’s quality when he’s fully fit and firing all on all cylinders, but the problem is that’s been a rare occurrence in recent times.

The 27-year-old was limited to 21 appearances in all competitions last season as he missed a large portion of the campaign with a hamstring issue, and when he returned he struggled to hit anywhere near his best form.

In fact, as per Transfermarkt Chilwell has missed 268 days through eight different injuries since he suffered his ACL injury in November 2021.

Questions have emerged surrounding Chilwell’s future with Enzo Maresca’s style on paper not appearing to suit his skillset, and he’s reportedly on Manchester United’s list as they look for a new left back.

The Athletic report that despite having three years left on his contract, Chilwell is a player the Blues could consider selling if the price is right, with the England international said to be one of the highest earners at the club.

Chilwell’s role might have diminished on the pitch, but off the pitch he has an important role due to the fact at the age of 27 he’s one of the oldest and most experienced members of the squad, and one of the few who actually knows what it’s like to win trophies with the club.

The former Leicester star has a chance to impress Maresca during pe-season and with Marc Cucurella having a well earned beak after winning Euro 2024 Chilwell really needs to take advantage and impress in the absence of his team-mate.
