Chelsea face huge decision over €25m valued defender who could leave for €40m loss

The briefings began before the Euros started and continued throughout – the sporting directors at Chelsea are “open” to selling either Ben Chilwell or Marc Cucurella this summer.

In fact, more than that, it seems they’d be quite keen to sell one of them if the price was right. It would mean a nice injection of FFP money, while allowing us to potentially buy a cheaper replacement whose cost would be amortised through the length of their deal.

Depending on their intentions for Renato Veiga, who is capable of playing in that position, it may be that those in charge think they already have that replacement on the books. In that case, selling one of the left backs would a great move to free up money to spend elsewhere.

Unlikely Euro star’s interesting situation

This makes Marc Cucurella’s situation all the more interesting. He hadn’t played a competitive game for Spain before this tournament, but has ended up starring in it. Most pundits have had him in their “best XI” after he assisted the winning goal in the final.

Does this mean we now give him a second chance in the first team? Or does this mean we should now cash in?

We paid an insane €65m to Brighton for him, and even after this great tournament it feels impossible we recoup that entirely. But this could still be the peak of his value in terms of a sale. Transfermarkt have him valued at just €25m, a brutal drop from what we paid. We’d expect that to be bumped up after a good showing in Germany, but it’s still

Do we sell now while he’s on a high, or hope he can replicate this form a little under Enzo Maresca at Stamford Bridge next season? The next few weeks are going to be fascinating on that front.

  1. Transfer market is obviously behind times. He’d fetch way more than 25m based on his Euro performances. However, I don’t see why we would want to let him go when he is obviously such a good fit for a possession-based style of play. It’s Ben Chilwell who really looks the more expendable (if one of them needs to be sold).
