Chelsea reach agreement to terminate final year of forgotten man’s contract ahead of exit

Chelsea and Malang Sarr have reached an agreement to terminate the final year of his contract ahead of a move to Lens according to reports.

Sarr joined Chelsea back in 2020 on a five year deal after his contract with French side Nice expired, but he only made 21 appearances for the Blues.

The Frenchman made just eight Premier League appearances for the club in four years and spent two years on loan at Porto and Monaco respectively.

Sarr last appeared for Chelsea in the 2021/2022 season and Monaco decided not take up the buy option after his loan during the 2022/2023 campaign.

The 25-year-old was completely frozen out of all first team activities under Mauricio Pochettino last season and often trained with the club’s youth teams.

The Frenchman has posted a number of videos to social media of him working hard in the off season, perhaps in an attempt to try and attract any potential suitors.

It was reported last week that Sarr was close to a return to France with Lens, and the defender is set to sign a two year deal with the Ligue 1 outfit and undergo a medical this week.

French outlet L’equipe have reported that Chelsea and Sarr have come to an agreement to terminate the final year of his contact, which was reportedly worth in excess of £100,000 per week.

Sarr is one of a number of names the Blues are looking to offload and they will be glad to have shifted his wages off the books, whilst I’m sure he will be glad to put his time at the club behind him and go and play regular football again having spent a year on the sidelines.

The former Nice man isn’t the only defender who could be leaving Stamford Bridge this summer, with Trevoh Chalobah also likely to move on having been left out of the squad for Chelsea’s tour of America.
