Chelsea have made a few signings this summer, but there’s still a huge amount left to do.
One situation that hasn’t even begun to be resolved yet is left back. We’ve had multiple briefings that Chelsea are open to selling either Ben Chilwell or Marc Cucurella, but there doesn’t seem to be anything imminent on either front.
Meanwhile Liverpool seem to be closing in on our top target in that position. Rayan Ait-Nouri of Wolves is still just 23 and looks like one of the best attacking wing backs in the league. Caughtoffside sources claim he’s still a target for Chelsea and Man City, despite the Reds leading the race. They say a €45m price tag is being battled over.
If we don’t move fast, we risk missing out on him, which would be a huge shame given he’s a really established and talented option in the Premier League, despite still being young. He would be such an immediate and clear upgrade over what we already have on the left flank. Liverpool and City being interested only seems to confirm his quality.
Lack of concrete convincing action
As we said above, we haven’t heard enough on this front to really be convinced that Chelsea are considering making a bid this summer. There’s definitely interest, but teams like Liverpool are quite clearly further down the line than us.
Unless we suddenly get a convincing offer for one of our existing options at left back, it looks more like we will stick with what we’ve got this summer. All the focus is on upgrading our striker and right winger, and left back is a secondary concern.
Of course that all changes if a big bid for Cucurella or Chilwell comes in… Then the scramble could be on to hijack Liverpool’s deal.
