Chelsea’s lowest rated player against Celtic has disaster – his shocking form sums up struggling project

Chelsea were beaten 4-1 last night by Celtic, and the Sun’s player ratings picked out one Blue as a 4/10, the lowest on the team.

Obviously player ratings are basically a nonsense, but they do given a general idea of the best and worst in a game, and in this case it was defender Benoit Badiashile who got stuck with the lowest rating.

“An absolute shocker for the third Celtic goal, sending a pass backwards straight to the feet of Palma. Had been good going forwards on the ball before that but a real moment to forget,” their summary read.

The whole defence was poor, ripped apart by a bright and sparky Celtic team. Sadly, this was not a one off for Badiashile, who looks a shadow of the player we thought we were signing.

A decline which mirrors far too many players

Badiashile’s decline since arriving has really been something to behold, and in many ways is disturbingly illustrative of the project as a whole. He was signed as a young player to come in and improve, raising his value and improving the team.

Instead, after a bright start in a difficult time, he’s just got worse. Like so many of his colleagues, he’s been hit by constant injuries, and has looked unsettled and poor every time he’s managed to get fit. Almost every one of his spells in the team has been under a different manager, with a different goalkeeper and defence alongside him.

That’s not to excuse his poor form entirely, and moments like his mistake yesterday shouldn’t happen regardless, but it does add some context to his struggles.

Right now we’d struggle to find anyone who was interested in buying him, and any hopes of making a profit on his €40m move now look laughable.
