Disturbing situation around home-grown defender takes nasty twist as club turn to extreme measures

The Trevoh Chalobah situation at Chelsea is one of the most frustrating we can remember at Chelsea, and things have just taken an even nastier twist.

To recap: the centre back has been at the club since 8 years old. He was never considered likely to make a first team breakthrough, but forced his way in under Thomas Tuchel when we were short at the back, and proved he was a quality player.

Since then there have been multiple attempts to sell him, but he’s always resisted, and done his talking on the pitch. Finally the club seemed to understand what they had on their hands in late 2022, when the current owners offered him an 8 year contract.

Yet last summer, the plan seemed to be back to trying to sell him again. His long deal meant he could easily resist, and after missing the first half of the campaign injured, he returned and once again showed himself to be a quality player – the best centre back we had from the turn of the year.

A dark turn in the tale

But the attempts to force him out have continued. He’s not looked happy in the snippets of preseason we’ve seen, and now yesterday’s rumours are being widely confirmed.

The fan favourite, Chelsea born and bred, is being left off the USA tour to try and force him into accepting a move away. The sporting directors want to repay the vast sums wasted on unnecessary transfers by selling off another academy product.

It’s a disgusting way to treat any player, let alone one who with such a deep and strong connection to the club, who has done nothing but work hard and play well and not complain. Trevoh knows his worth, and knows he’s in a strong position with years left on his deal.
