€15m Chelsea signing has his medicals “today” and transfer will be official in next hours

Chelsea’s summer has been very steady so far – a number of players have come in for smaller fees, and a number have left.

The next move is already lined up – Renato Veiga is set to join the club from FC Basel for around €15m. It’s a move which came from nowhere last week, but now it seems it’s already almost wrapped up.

Sport Witness have translated reports from Portuguese football newspaper O Jogo, where there’s finally some detail about this pending move.

They claim that Veiga is in London right now doing his medicals. The transfer fee and personal terms are agreed, it’s just a question of getting the medical tests sorted, then the deal can be made “official” in FIFA’s transfer matching system.

After that it’s all over – it’s just a question of when Chelsea feel like announcing it. Given there’s been a lot of content in the last couple of days thanks to the return to training, they’ll be in no rush to crowd your timelines. But equally, coach Enzo Maresca will want Veiga in training as soon as possible, and they’ll have to announce the deal before he’s spotted at Cobham.

Portugal expects every man to do his duty

The reason that the Portuguese media are particularly switched on with this deal is twofold – firstly because Veiga is a Portugal U20 international, and they’re interested in his future, and secondly because Sporting Club de Portugal still have a 10% sell on fee in his deal with Basel, so they’re in line for a €1.5m windfall.

It’s not a huge amount in Premier League term, but in Portugal that still moves the needle. They’re always proud of their incredible production line of talent, and keen to see those players do well abroad.
