€25m valued Chelsea player’s “price is higher than Chilwell’s” claims influencer

Chelsea influencer Alex Goldberg has today been discussing Fabrizio Romano’s claims that Chelsea could sell either Marc Cucurella or Ben Chilwell this summer.

He points out the fact that the club aren’t “married” to keeping Cucurella, despite his good form since Christmas and with Spain. Chilwell is also well liked at the club, but his inability to stay fit is clearly making a more reliable option down that side a priority.

Interestingly, Goldberg also says that Cucurella’s “price is gonna be higher than Chilwell’s… as it should be.”

This is all speculation from him (to be fair, he’s not claiming it’s anything more). But is it accurate? Who would have the higher asking price?

Who’s worth more?

There are so many factors that go into deciding a player’s value, and their value is always different to the price.

Chilwell certainly has a lot in his favour – he’s got lots of England caps, lots more Premier League experience, he’s won major trophies and without injury would likely be considered among the best left backs in the Premier League.

Many would argue he’s flat out just a better player too.

But he’s also two years older, which has a strong effect on driving his price down. Cucurella has an extra year of contract compared to his teammate.

Going by Transfermarkt, Chilwell is valued at €28m and Cucurella at €25m. Although those updates came before Cucurella’s great form at the Euros with Spain, so we’d expect them to be even closer (or reversed) in the next update.

From where we see it, in terms of their raw value they’re almost neck and neck. But in terms of what Chelsea would accept, they’d need a higher price to let Cucurella leave, just because they paid more for him, more recently, and can’t take losses on players.
