Ex-Chelsea defender explains why former academy star isn’t coming back

Chelsea have let a number of good players slip through their fingers over the years, and Marc Guehi was one of them.

Even at the time, it was clear that he was going to be a good player, there just wasn’t room for regular minutes for him at the back. Unfortunately, within a year of Guehi going, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen were also heading out, and we suddenly wished we had him back.

We’ve since bought a lot of players, and despite recent rumours linking us with a move to bring Guehi back, former Blue Wayne Bridge isn’t convinced by the idea.

“He’s a great player, but I’m not sure. Chelsea already have a number of centre-backs and I think if they’re going to buy another it needs to be guaranteed they’re the main one. I don’t know if Guehi is going to be that one,” Bridge said.

“You don’t need any more centre-backs as squad players, you need that one player that’s going to be their rock at the back like Thiago Silva was for them.”

The one that got away

Bridge is totally right of course, this was a discussion for last year, not this summer. We were being linked with Guehi plenty back then. The money we spent on Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile would have been much better spent on the former academy player, with someone like Bashir Humphreys then sticking around rather than going on loan.

A centre back selection of Levi Colwill, Marc Guehi, Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah has it all. Guehi’s left footedness would solve a lot of issues with the current squad makeup too.

But it’s too late now, and we’re likely going to have to watch him go and continue his success elsewhere.
