It’s been the source of disgruntlement for many Chelsea fans who believe that the club should be looking at players who improve what they already have in the first team squad rather than just spending all their money on new young players who have potential, but might not even ever play for Chelsea.

So there is a clear strategy there from the club bringing in all these young talents, and our own writer Simon Phillips has explained it all via a deep dive article on his own Substack website.

Many reasons revealed

Phillips says there are three main reasons and goes into detail on them all in the article. But in a nutshell, they are:

  • PSR and profits
  • Potential transfer ban and points deduction
  • Building for the future (before they become big names)

Phillips says: “It’s pro-active due diligence really and the club covering themselves, but has also always been part of the wider plans and recruitment strategy as well as the desire to reduce the overall wage bill at the club, which they have already done. None of this is anything new and it was always planned from the early stages.”
