Fabrizio Romano adds €4.5m to final fee for latest dodgy Chelsea signing

Chelsea’s interest in Filip Jorgensen moved very quickly.

It was just 10 days or so ago that we first heard of serious interest in the Villareal goalkeeper. Since then rapid progress was made – personal terms were agreed, a transfer fee with his club, and as of late last night Fabrizio Romano was reporting that the stopper would be taking his medical in the USA today, ready to join up with the squad as soon as possible. It’s all gone through so rapidly that we could yet see the Denmark youth international involved in our friendlies later this week.

One interesting detail that has emerged since the initial reports is the price. It was being called a €20m fee in most places, but Romano’s latest update says “Villareal to receive [a] €24.5m package.”

That’s quite a chunk more – although the additional €4.5m is presumably made up of add-ons and bonuses which will only be triggered if Jorgensen performs well for us. In any case it’s important to get him training with the squad as soon as possible.

A bad record – will it get worse?

We’d be lying if we said we were super excited about Jorgensen – firstly the reports from Spain aren’t that great. They’re hardly raving about his ability or his potential. We’ve even seen Villareal fans celebrating the fact they managed to get such a decent fee for him after just one season as a starter.

Plus then there’s the record of these sporting directors – as far as we’re concerned, they’re already 0/3 on signing good goalies. Why should we be confident they’ve got this one right?

Yet given how poor both Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic proved to be with the ball at their feet, and given how new manager Enzo Maresca clearly wants to play, we can understand the move. Let’s hope that it’s fourth time lucky for WinStewart.
