Gareth Southgate quits – Three former Chelsea managers shortlisted to replace him

There are three former Chelsea managers on list of candidates to replace Gareth Southgate as the next England manager, according to a report today.

Southgate has just resigned as England boss after admitting that “it’s time for a new chapter”.

He saw his side miss out on winning the Euros once again this summer, losing 2-1 to Spain in the final. They lost to Italy on penalties in the last Euros final too.

Southgate released an emotional statement that said: “As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England.

“It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.”

Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham confirmed that the search for Southgate’s successor is now under way.

Bullingham said: “The process for appointing Gareth’s successor is now under way and we aim to have our new manager confirmed as soon as possible. Our Uefa Nations League campaign starts in September, and we have an interim solution in place if it is needed.”

Three former Blues could step up

As reported by Telegraph Sport, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe will be among the frontrunners, with Graham Potter, Lee Carsley, Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel.

For me, Tuchel would be a fantastic choice and the best out of that bunch. The rest are a bit soft, and not amazing tactically. Whereas Tuchel is a top tactical manager and as well as that, is a top motivator and has a great mentality.

Some would have an issue hiring a foreign manager, but that wouldn’t concern me at all. I just want to see a natural born winner come in who is good tactically.
