“Gutted” – Cole Palmer reacts after England lose Euros final but holds head high

Chelsea’s Cole Palmer was very almost a hero for England last night if it wasn’t for a late winner from Spain to see them become Euros champions.

England didn’t play that well and they went 1-0 down in the second half. Gareth Southgate once again called on his super sub Palmer to come on and help get a goal back, and he once again did exactly that. Last time it was the assist to Ollie Watkins to win the game, and this time Palmer took the game by the scruff of the neck and scored a great goal from outside the box to get England back on level terms.

Let’s face it, Palmer should have been starting games and it’s absolutely criminal that Southgate only used him as a very late sub every game all tournament. Palmer proved once again that he can literally get you a goal from nothing and he can change a game – he should have been given more starts.

Palmer is gutted

As cited on X, Palmer said after the game: “Spain have been brilliant all tournament, everyone has seen what they can do so congratulations from them. We hoped to but we didn’t do that. I’m gutted. We got to another final, there’s positives to take but everyone wanted to go one step further and we didn’t.”

One goal, one assist, zero starts at the Euros for Cole Palmer. His impact was incredible and he can fully hold his head high. The same cannot be said about many of the other England players and also Southgate. I think they played well for 45 minutes of the entire tournament – the first 45 against Netherlands. Other than that they really were poor. And with this group of players they have, they should be playing much better. And for me, that is on the manager, a very poor tactical manager.
