“Magnificent” – 187cm teenager impresses Spanish media; could change Chelsea’s plans

Yesterday was Chelsea’s first game of preseason, and there was a different team played in each half, so there was no shortage of players debuting. One of them stood out above most of the others however.

Marc Guiu is still just 18 and not just playing his first minutes for Chelsea, but some of his first minutes as a senior player having featured in just a handful of cameos for Barcelona last season. He really impressed, and watching from the stands were top Spanish sports paper AS, who published a whole article praising his performance.

They were naturally curious to see how a highly rated Spanish talent would get on after making a very early (and very risky) move across Europe, and while it was only 45 minutes worth of evidence, it was very positive.

They noted that the striker led the line, supported by the trickery and talent of Noni Madueke and Christopher Nkunku. “The Spaniard was more than just a participant,” they noted.

Particularly impressive was the way he attacked, keeping the game stretched by threatening to run in behind all the time. “Guiu was magnificent playing off the shoulder,” they commented, and praising his already impressive physique as potentially crucial in settling in to the English game.

“The constant pressure which [manager Enzo] Maresca demanded from his players was always led by Guiu.”

A bright start for the youngster

When the signing was announced, most were confident that Guiu was going to be loaned out and another more established striker brought in to compete with Nicolas Jackson. But games like this could be crucial and allow the Spaniard to show the manager and the sporting directors that he’s already ready, both physically and in terms of quality, to be Jackson’s backup.

We’re already looking forward to seeing him in action again on Saturday when we play Celtic.
