Medical completed – when new signing could join training with Man City on the horizon

Fabrizio Romano has just given an important update on Chelsea’s next signing.

Villareal goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen is in the USA, and has “completed the main part of his medical tests,” according to the insider. The mission has clearly been to get the deal done as quickly as possible, and doing the tests over there should help a smooth transition to get the Danish youth international into preseason with his new teammates as soon as possible.

Romano adds that it’s going to be another one of those big contracts – valid until June 2030, with an extra year’s optional extension available. The 22 year old must have done something to impress our scouts – a lot of the people we’ve spoken to didn’t think he had done much to earn this move after just one season playing in La Liga.

A clear path to first team minutes – unlike some signings

This is another move following the pattern set already this summer – medium priced purchases for medium rated players. We’ve yet to see anyone really spectacular come in, or even really be strongly linked.

At least Jorgensen has a clear path to making an impact on the first team, something that can’t be said for a lot of the teenagers and young talents we’ve continued to accumulate. Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic clearly aren’t considered up to it, and it seems like the latter will be sold if possible. Jorgensen’s presence in the US means he could potentially join up with training within the next 24 hours once everything’s signed off on, and certainly he will be expected to get some minutes in the team before the tour is over.

If all goes well, he could be our first choice goalkeeper for the opening game of the season against Manchester City in less than 3 weeks time.
