Pochettino regrets or just teething trouble – Chelsea’s dodgy preseason so far

It’s always the same in preseason. If you win, you don’t get too excited because they’re only friendly games. But if you lose, you can’t help but get worried.

So far Chelsea have drawn with Wrexham and lost heavily to Celtic, and already supporters are having to remind themselves not to get caught up in bad results.

The new coach has only just taken over, and had barely two weeks to work with the bulk of his squad before jetting off to the USA on tour. The regular games out there means there’s barely any training time, just rest between matches. So bad results are to be expected, especially against a Celtic team who we noted before kick off are far ahead of us in preparation, and a much more settled team.

Still, so far it’s been pretty dreadful, both in attack and defence. There are some very worrying signs, and one can’t help but feel we’d be looking far slicker with Mauricio Pochettino in charge.

Plenty of positives to look forward to – but worrying is legitimate

There’s plenty of hope though – Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson and Marc Cucurella could all be starters for this team, and they’ve yet to even join up with the squad.

We’d love to say the same about Conor Gallagher and Trevoh Chalobah, but the big brains in charge of building this team have decided they should be sold.

Either way however, there’s plenty more quality to return to the squad, and when that’s combined with more time on the training field with the new coach, and perhaps some new signings, there’s still plenty of hope left.

We will need some better performances and better results in the games to come if we want to relax a little before the season starts, however.
