Romano reports Chelsea “make initial approach” for player in problem position, 3 others considered

Today has already had some rumours about a goalkeeper coming to Chelsea. There was big talk this morning that Enzo Maresca was pushing to sign Mads Hermansen, the former Brondby goalkeeper he took to Leicester a year ago.

Fabrizio Romano has just backed up that chatter – but also made it seem like there’s a far more imminent move on the cards. According to the insider, Chelsea have made an “initial approach” for Villareal goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.

The Italian insider claims that talks have already begun “on the players’ side” with the Swedish keeper “keen on” a move to Stamford Bridge. Romano stresses that the whole situation is in the “early stages,” however.

There are apparently 4 names under consideration – Hermansen, Jorgensen, and two others who we’re not sure of yet. Giorgi Mamardashvili is apparently not one of them, despite seeming to be one of the best options on the market at the moment. We can only assume Valencia’s asking price is simply too high.

Chelsea in difficult situation in defence

Chelsea’s situation in goal is no more clear than it was a year ago, or even two years ago. They’ve bought a whole cluster of mid-level keepers, and keep having to back for more, rather than being decisive, saving up a serious chunk of money, and then swooping for someone really good.

Then again, the last time the club spent big on a keeper it was Kepa Arrizabalaga, so we can understand their reluctance…

In general we’re happy to see interest in new goalkeeping options being made concrete, as we’re not convinced that existing options Robert Sanchez or Djordje Petrovic are up to it. However we’re also not convinced that Jorgensen is a significant upgrade on either of them, despite likely being better suited to Enzo Maresca’s style of football.
