Romano says Chelsea are “attentive” to the future of Barcelona’s top target

Nico Williams is one of the biggest prizes of the whole summer in the transfer market.

After a really strong season with Athletic Bilbao his star was already rising, but a superb campaign for Spain in Germany at Euro 2024 has cemented him as one of the most in demand wingers in world football, and certainly the most in demand winger potentially on the market this summer.

Chelsea have been named as an interested party time and time again, but we’ve got taken it too seriously. The figures involved to sign him are just too huge, and we can’t even offer him the Champions League football that a player of his quality is surely determined to be involved in.

Romano keeps Blues in the hunt

Yet no other team seems to be making much progress, and if Barcelona are in the mix, why not us CaughtOffside’s latest update from Fabrizio Romano has the Catalan club as favourites, but the Blues still very much in the mix:

“Barca know that Premier League clubs are coming…. We know about the interest of Chelsea and Arsenal who are keeping a close eye to the situation. He’s still very expensive for both clubs because the clause has to be paid in one solution; big commission, big salary,” Romano wrote.

“This is why, for example, one month ago, Chelsea decided to go slower on the story of Nico Williams, but in case Barcelona don’t close the deal, Chelsea and Arsenal are attentive to the situation.”

By the sounds things it’s still far off, but there’s no reason Barcelona should be able to afford him if we can’t. If the next few weeks sees us making significant sales from the first team and Athletic BIlbao are still battling Barca over the fee, we can well see us elbowing in with a big offer.
