Three former Chelsea managers among candidates to replace Southgate if he steps down

Three former Chelsea managers are among the contenders to replace Gareth Southgate if he decides to step down as England manager according to reports.

England suffered more heartbreak as they lost 2-1 to Spain in the final of Euro 2024, making it consecutive European Championship final defeats.

Southgate has guided the Three Lions through four major tournaments now, reaching two finals, a semi final and a quarter final, and there’s a feeling that Sunday night could have been his last in charge.

Southgate said after the defeat in Berlin that now wasn’t the right time to make a decision on his future, but according to The Telegraph there’s a list of seven potential candidates, with three former Chelsea managers in the running.

The Telegraph report that Thomas Tuchel, Graham, Potter and Mauricio Pochettino are among possible candidates whilst Frank Lampard is seen as an outsider.

The report adds that Eddie Howe and England under-21 manager Lee Carsley are also on the list with Steven Gerrard considered another outsider.

Tuchel is out of work having left Bayern Munich at the end of last season, and would no doubt be a brilliant choice given his record in knockout football, whilst Pochettino, who left Chelsea at the end of last season after just a year in charge could be a good option.

If the FA want to remain with an English coach then Potter who has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea would be a strong contender.

The former Brighton boss was in the running to become manager of Ajax and Leicester but neither move materialised in the end, with the report adding he would be interested in the job.

The FA would reportedly like Southgate to stay on, but it feels like he’s taken the team as far as he can, and it needs someone new at the helm with fresh ideas to try and get England over the line as they certainly have the talent at their disposal to win.
