Tottenham and Chelsea front of line for Serie A defender after Arsenal fall back

The latest reports from Europe are throwing Chelsea’s name into the mix in the pursuit of Patrick Dorgu, the Lecce left back who has impressed in Serie A after breaking into their team as a youngster.

So far this summer it’s been Tottenham and Arsenal most strongly linked to the 19 year old, who is valued at €30m in a report by Calcio Lecce, who have added the Blues to the list of interested teams.

Arsenal are closing in on Ricardo Calafiori, and given they already have a couple of options on the left, it feels like that will rule them out of their race. Tottenham, on the other hand, are well in it, and have had the time to put a lot of groundwork in with Dorgu and his people, as well as Lecce themselves.

A rising talent attracts a lot of interest

It’s been surprising that we haven’t been mentioned more often in reports about Dorgu’s future given we’re clearly in the market for a left back, albeit not urgently. We will have to sell either Ben Chilwell or Marc Cucurella, and while it’s very clear that the sporting directors are happy to do that, so far there’s little indication that any clubs are coming in for them.

As with so many other parts of our business this summer, it’s all waiting on sales before it can really get going, and sales aren’t proving easy to come by. At the moment it’s hard enough to get even our loan moves done, the market is very slow and making a big, important sale like one of those first team left backs feels impossible.

If movement is made in that direction, however, expect there to be a sudden uptick interest in Dorgu and similar players. We’ve just got to hope Tottenham don’t wrap a deal up in the meantime.
