Two Premier League teams push for Chelsea defender – but can’t offer the one thing he wants

There was shock and disgust about the way that Chelsea left home grown defender Trevoh Chalobah out of their travelling group for the USA tour as the club try to force him to accept a move elsewhere.

TalkSport today report that two teams are currently pushing to sign him – Crystal Palace and West Ham.

Palace fear they’ll lose Marc Guehi, another former Cobham lad, to a big team this summer, and see Chalobah as a great replacement. West Ham want to continue their impressive overhaul of the squad by shifting centre backs Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd and they like 24 year old Chalobah as a replacement.

Chalobah can sit pretty and wait for European interest

Perhaps Chelsea’s tactics will work, and they will be able to persuade Chalobah to take an option he doesn’t really want to. But all the talk from the players side is that he’s only interested in a move which brings him European football – and ideally at a level higher than the Conference League, where Chelsea will be playing this season.

With the long contract he signed back at the end of 2022 meaning he has all the leverage here, he can happily sit tight if an option he doesn’t like doesn’t present itself.

No matter how much the sporting directors tell him he’s not in their plans, he can be confident that just like last year, the chance to play will come along eventually, and he will prove his worth when it does.

So while both these clubs can offer respect and status that Chelsea don’t, he’s perfectly entitled (and probably quite wise) to sit tight and see who else comes along. He’s good enough to play for a Champions League team, and Chelsea aren’t asking crazy money for him – so why not wait until the last minute and see what all your options are?
