What Romeo Lavia can bring which Chelsea missed last season – but stats contradict claims

Matt Law was on the London is Blue podcast this week, and Romeo Lavia was a central theme.

The fact that he missed all of last season makes him something of a mystery man, but we are going to finally see him get plenty of action this preseason because both Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo are going to join up late after going deep in the Copa America.

Law says one thing he thinks the Belgian can bring is some aerial presence to the midfield. We totally agree that that was something desperately lacking last season.

There is a counter argument to that – Lavia is only a few centimetres taller than Fernandez or Caicedo.

But still, those few centimetres may make the difference, and it may also be that Lavia is simply more confident and better in the air in terms of technique (although the stats say he actually has the lowest aerial duel success rate of all 3).

It will be interesting to see if Law’s prediction plays out.
