£17.5m Wolfsburg deal could set off chain reaction that takes Chelsea defender across London

It has just been confirmed by some major sources that Crystal Palace have agreed a £17.5m fee for Wolfsburg defender Maxence Lacroix.

Given they have just sold Joachim Andersen to Fulham, that’s a move that makes a lot of sense for Palace, who have done a great job in terms of their scouting and signing over the last few years.

But there could yet be more need for defensive reinforcements. Newcastle’s attempts to sign Marc Guehi have continued, and if they do end up completing a deal for the other Palace centre back, there will be alarm bells ringing at Selhurst Park, with just days until the window closes.

Palace’s smart scouts turn to £30m Chelsea deal

According to the Telegraph, one of their top targets to fill the gap left by Guehi is likely to be Trevoh Chalobah. The Chelsea defender has been training with the bomb squad all summer after being left off the USA tour, and there has been little concrete chatter about a move for him despite his excellent 6 months to finish last season.

The 25 year old is available and Premier League experienced. Given Chelsea really must be keen to have him sold by the deadline rather than have him hang around all year, there seems a good chance they can make a deal happen with the Eagles pretty quickly should the Guehi deal go through.

Reports claim that the Blues want between £25m and £30m for their academy product, which would be a great deal for Palace. All eyes now turn to the Sky Sports yellow ticker to see if Newcastle finally get their man, and potentially continue the chain reaction across the league.

If that fails, could we see a late scramble to loan the defender out? Or will we see him integrated back into the main group?
