Athletic: Key Chelsea player wasn’t actually injured last season – absent for another reason

Astonishingly, it’s been claimed that one injured Chelsea player from last season was not actually even injured and he could have been featuring much sooner than he did.

Chelsea lost a lot of key players last season due to big injuries, and some players barely even kicked a ball at all in a Chelsea shirt.

EXCLUSIVE! Chelsea will make SECOND Oscar Bobb approach, closing on Grabriel Mec!!

The likes of Christopher Nkunku barely played, and Wesley Fofana didn’t play at all. And then there was Romeo Lavia, who we expected back at the end of the season but he did not feature hardly at all other than for one game.

Chelsea then announced that Lavia was not going to feature again for the rest of the season and we all believed it was an injury set back.

Lavia was not injured

Lavia was actually not injured and could have featured sooner, according to a report from The Athletic today.

They claim Lavia could have returned to action before the end of last season but the club and player made a joint decision not to take any risks for the sake of a couple of appearances. When Chelsea announced in March that the 20-year-old would not feature again that season, it was assumed he had suffered another major setback. In truth, the statement was released to take the pressure off Lavia’s shoulders.

All seems rather odd if you ask me but I suppose I can understand the thinking behind it, if this is true of course.

Lavia is expected to be a key player now under Enzo Maresca.
