BBC: Chelsea lock 19 year old talent in on new contract after extended talks

With the transfer window really peaking in terms of excitement and activity, it’s easy to forget some of the less headline news and moves going on in the background at Chelsea.

One major story of this summer so far has been the young players – Rio Ngumoha is apparently going to join Liverpool (although we’ve not seen that confirmed yet) and plenty of others are considering their futures. The Blues were able to get Jimmy Jay Morgan to sign a new deal, and now it looks like they’ve tied down another double-barrelled star.

Nizaar Kinsella is reporting for the BBC that the Blues have locked down Sam Rak-Sakyi to a new two year deal. The 19 year old has worked his way up through the ranks and really impressed last season, where he played 49 games for different academy teams.

His deal actually ran out in June, but “amicable” talks have been ongoing ever since, and it seems there’s now been a breakthrough at last.

The signing is expected to take place tomorrow, according to Kinsella. Sadly an injury to Sam has hurt his prospects of a loan in this window, but if he recovers and continues playing well in the youth sides, we could well see him head out in January.

Exodus fears not quelled

A two year deal isn’t much compared to the monster contracts being handed out to new signings, but it at least keeps Rak-Sakyi around and gives us the chance to convince him he’s got a future here and should sign a new deal.

It hasn’t convinced us that we don’t face a major issue at youth level, however. The constant influx of talented young players from abroad is going to make it very hard to convince a lot of these youngsters that staying is a good idea.
