Chelsea are one of four Premier League clubs to have expressed an interest in Liverpool centre back Joe Gomez according to reports.
The Blues are set for a busy end to the window and are still trying to complete deals for Joao Felix and Victor Osimhen, whilst they also need to offload a number of players.
Enzo Maresca’s men kick off the new season against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday and will be hoping for a top four finish and a return to the Champions League.
Chelsea interested in Gomez
The Blues have had a mixed pre-season and whilst there have been positives one major concern is how vulnerable the team has looked defensively, with the team conceding 13 goals across six games.
Chelsea conceded a club record amount of goals in the Premier League last season and that is one thing Maresca will be looking to get on top off.
Thiago Silva has left whilst Tosin Adarabioyo has arrived on a free transfer from Fulham and Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana are set to begin the season as Chelsea’s first choice pairing.
The club are looking to move on Trevoh Chalobah and have decided the 25-year-old is surplus to requirements, and if he does leave it’s unclear if the Blues will look to bring another centre back in.
However, The Times have reported that Chelsea are one of several Premier League clubs interested in signing Liverpool’s Gomez.
Gomez has been left out of Liverpool’s match day squad for Saturday’s game against Ipswich with the report adding that Newcastle, Aston Villa and Fulham are also interested in the 27-year-old.
It’s unclear how much Gomez is valued at by Liverpool but The Times add Newcastle valued him at £45m when they were in discussions over a potential swap deal involving Anthony Gordon.
Gomez is versatile and can play across the backline, but you feel if Chelsea are going to go for another centre back they need to be a starter and it’s arguable how much better, if at all Gomez is than the current options at the club.
