Chelsea are “very happy” with £32m player already – early contract renewal incoming

Nicolas Jackson is to be offered a new contract by Chelsea, Fabrizio Romano has claimed in a Tweet today.

Negotiations have apparently “already started” to reward the Senegal striker with an improved deal after just one year at Stamford Bridge.

“Talks ongoing over longer deal and higher salary for Jackson as club’s very happy with his impact on first PL season,” the insider wrote on his Twitter.

Jackson had a slow start and some dodgy games along the way, but by and large fans were pleased with his impact, and it’s clear to see why the club think he’s going to be a big hit. The search is on for his backup, but there’s no doubting that the £32m transfer from a year ago has proved to be a hit already.

Chelsea undermine their own strategy straight away

As we said with the Palmer deal yesterday, we’re not sure quite how to feel about this. Yes it makes sense that you should rewards your best players, and the players who perform well with new contracts. That’s how things have always tended to work in football.

But it runs contrary to the controversial plan that was already in place under the new “strategy” from the sporting directors. Their idea was to give out enormously long 7 or 8 year deals which tie a player in at a low wage, meaning that over time you can build a great squad on low wages.

If you then start rewarding each player who excels with a wage rise, you end up with your good players on big wages anyway – plus now you’ve got your transfer market misses on ultra long deals.

By doing this they undermine their own long term strategy – perhaps sticking to the conventional way of doing things would have been more sensible…
