New Chelsea signing made one significant sacrifice in order to join the club

Chelsea saw an opportunity in signing Jadon Sancho from Manchester United according to The Athletic’s Liam Twomey, whilst he’s also taken a significant pay cut to complete the move.

The Blues spent the majority of deadline day trying to reach an agreement for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, but they did manage to complete a deal for Sancho.

The England international has arrived on an initial loan deal which will reportedly become permanent for between £20-£25m if Chelsea finish in the top 14 of the Premier League with the fee going up the higher the Blues finish.

Chelsea saw an opportunity in Sancho

Some may have been surprised that Chelsea decided to sign Sancho given the amount of attacking players they already have at the club but their interest in the winger reportedly pre-dates this window.

The move will see Sancho return to London where he grew up and he also knows Chelsea’s co-director of recruitment and talent Joe Shields very well, with Shields the man credited with discovering Sancho.

Enzo Maresca is also aware of the 24-year-old and mentioned earlier this week he had tracked Sancho’s career and after a difficult spell at United, Chelsea will be hoping the Italian is the man to revitalise the forward.

Sancho is the third high profile attacking signing to join Chelsea this summer.

Twomey has reported  that Chelsea saw an opportunity in Sancho and purely from a financial perspective it feels like a good deal and the reported fee is significantly less than the £70m plus which the Red Devils paid in 2021.

Having been electric at Dortmund Sancho struggled to recreate that form at Old Trafford and had a huge falling out with Erik ten Hag last season which ultimately led to him returning on loan to Dortmund for the second half of last season.

Twomey has also added that Sancho has taken in his words a “significant” pay cut to join Chelsea and fit in with the club’s wage structure.

Quite where Sancho is going to play and if Chelsea is the right environment for him to get his career back on track remains to be seen, but if everything works out then it really will be a brilliant deal for Chelsea.
