Chelsea held discussions with European giants over shock swap deal

Chelsea and Juventus tried to do a swap deal with Raheem Sterling and Federico Chiesa but they couldn’t reach an agreement on the finances of the deal according to reports.

The Blues are set for a busy end to the window and whilst Joao Felix and Victor Osimhen could both arrive at the club, they desperately need to offload a number of players before the deadline.

Much has been documented of Chelsea’s squad size and they face a race against the clock to move on the likes of Trevoh Chalobah, Armando Broja, Romelu Lukaku and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Chelsea and Juventus tried a Sterling Chiesa swap

It was reported earlier this week the Blues were very open to selling Sterling as they look to get his reported wages of in excess of £300,000 per week of the books.

The 29-year-old hasn’t lived up to expectations following his arrival from Manchester City in 2022, but moving him on with his current wages will be a big problem.

The Blues might have to find creative ways in the market and Italian outlet Di Marzio reported they discussed a swap deal with Juventus for Sterling and Chiesa, but it fell through due to financial disagreements on player valuations and salaries.

The report adds that if Chelsea can find a solution for Sterling elsewhere they may revisit a move for the Italy international.

Sterling, who still has three years remaining on his deal at Stamford Bridge is believed to be happy in London and is fully focused on the new season.

It could certainly be a situation to keep half an eye on towards the end of the window, particularly if the Blues bring Felix in.

What teams might come in remains to be seen and Sterling is thought to have turned down an approach from Saudi Arabia last summer, but if he stays the Blues will be hoping to see an improvement on his eight goals and four assists in 31 Premier League appearances last season.
