Carney Chukwuemeka will only be allowed to leave Chelsea on loan if an obligation to buy is included in the deal according to The Athletic.
Chukwuemeka joined the the Blues from Aston Villa in deal worth £20m in the summer of 2022 but his time at Stamford Bridge has been plagued by injury.
Despite showing glimpses of his talent the midfielder has been limited to just 27 appearances for the club across two seasons and there are now question marks hanging over his future.
Chelsea set stance on Chukwuemeka loan deal
Chukwuemeka got himself fit again towards the end of last season and scored a last minute winner against Leicester in the FA Cup, but opportunities were few and far between for the 20-year-old.
The midfielder had the summer off to regroup and it appeared he might be part of the plans after starting the first two games of pre-season.
It’s safe to say things haven’t gone to plan since then and Chukwuemeka hasn’t kicked a ball for the club since the defeat to Celtic.
Raheem Sterling’s omission from the match day squad grabbed the headlines but Chukwuemeka was also absent and it appears his days at the club could be numbered.
Enzo Maresca had previously hinted he couldn’t guarantee the former Villa man the games he needed which potentially opened the door to a loan move, whilst it was reported earlier this summer he has a release clause of £40m.
The Athletic have added some more detail to the situation and reported the Blues will only allow Chukwuemeka to leave on loan if there’s an obligation to buy included in the deal.
His future is certainly one to watch over the last days of the window and Chukwuemeka has been linked with a move a to Crystal Palace recently, whilst there were surprise links to Barcelona earlier this summer.
Wherever he ends up it’s pretty safe to say for the good of his career he will need to leave the Blues to get the regular football he needs to develop as a player.
